Background of the Study
The textile industry is one of the largest industrial consumers of water, with significant water usage in processes such as dyeing, bleaching, and finishing. In Nigeria, textile manufacturing contributes substantially to industrial wastewater generation, often discharging untreated effluents into the environment, leading to severe pollution (Adebayo et al., 2023). The improper disposal of textile wastewater, which contains hazardous chemicals, heavy metals, and dyes, poses serious environmental and public health risks.

Wastewater treatment and recycling have emerged as viable solutions to address these challenges, offering a way to reduce pollution while promoting sustainable water management. Many countries have implemented strict regulations to ensure textile industries adopt efficient wastewater treatment technologies such as membrane filtration, activated sludge processes, and chemical coagulation (UNEP, 2024). However, in Nigeria, the adoption of these technologies is still limited due to financial constraints, lack of enforcement of environmental regulations, and low awareness among industry stakeholders.

This study seeks to evaluate wastewater treatment and recycling practices in Nigerian textile industries, assessing their effectiveness, challenges, and potential benefits in promoting environmental sustainability.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the environmental impact of textile wastewater pollution, many Nigerian textile manufacturers lack proper wastewater treatment facilities. Effluents from textile factories are often discharged into rivers and lakes without adequate treatment, contributing to water contamination and ecosystem degradation (Eze & Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, existing wastewater treatment systems in the industry are often outdated, inefficient, or poorly maintained.

Recycling wastewater within textile industries could significantly reduce water consumption and pollution, yet adoption remains low due to high costs and limited government incentives. There is a need for a comprehensive evaluation of current wastewater treatment and recycling practices to determine their effectiveness and identify barriers to widespread implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of wastewater treatment technologies used in Nigerian textile industries.

  2. To evaluate the impact of wastewater recycling on water conservation and environmental sustainability.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with wastewater treatment and recycling in Nigerian textile manufacturing.

Research Questions

  1. What wastewater treatment technologies are currently being used in Nigerian textile industries?

  2. How does wastewater recycling contribute to water conservation and environmental sustainability in the textile sector?

  3. What are the major challenges affecting the implementation of wastewater treatment and recycling in Nigerian textile industries?

Research Hypotheses
Ho1: Wastewater treatment technologies used in Nigerian textile industries are not significantly effective in reducing pollution.
Ho2: Wastewater recycling does not have a significant impact on water conservation and environmental sustainability in the textile sector.
Ho3: There are no significant challenges affecting the adoption of wastewater treatment and recycling in Nigerian textile industries.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on selected textile industries in Nigeria, examining their wastewater treatment and recycling practices. It will assess the effectiveness of existing treatment technologies, regulatory compliance, and the feasibility of recycling wastewater. Limitations may include restricted access to factory operations and inconsistencies in data on wastewater management.

Definitions of Terms

  • Wastewater Treatment: The process of removing contaminants from industrial wastewater before disposal or reuse.

  • Recycling: The practice of treating wastewater for reuse in industrial operations.

  • Environmental Sustainability: The responsible use and management of resources to minimize negative environmental impacts.

  • Effluents: Liquid waste or sewage discharged into natural water bodies from industrial processes.
